Abstract
The purpose of this study is to identify factors that predict suicidal ideation and suicidal attempts of school youth and out-of-school youth. Subjects between the ages of 12 to 18 consisted of 4,076 students enrolled in middle schools and high schools and 423 out-of-school youths in shelters and juvenile detention centers. Data were analyzed using logistic regressions. The results of this study were as follows: First, regardless of whether they attended school, sex, depression, media coverage of celebrity suicide were identified as significant variables of suicidal ideation. In addition, drinking, passive attitude, suicide survival, family discord, conflict with friends, and suicide website visits appeared to influence suicidal ideation of school youth. In contrast, these factors appeared to be unrelated to suicidal ideation of out-of-school youth but economic conditions had a significant affect. Second, regardless of whether they attended school, sex, drinking, suicide survival, suicide website visits were identified to predict suicidal attempts. Passive attitude, depression, impulsivity, conflicts with friends appeared to affect suicide attempts of school youth. In contrast, these factors appeared to be unrelated to suicidal attempts of out-of-school youth but media coverage of celebrity suicide was a significant variable. Based on these results, suicide prevention and intervention strategies with the necessary policy measures for school and out-of-school youth were presented with a special emphasis on differences between school and out-of-school youth in predicting factors of suicidal ideation and suicidal attempts.
